We publish what we pay, who we pay it to, and what it costs us to make a bar. The more you learn about our chocolate, the better you should feel about it.
What we pay farmers
Every harvest we publish the price per kilo we paid at each origin, alongside the local farmgate price and the world market price on the day of purchase. In every year of our history we have paid above both, usually by 30 to 60 percent.
Profit sharing, in person
Our farmer partners receive a second payment, a share of the profit from the bars made with their beans, paid in person on our next origin trip with the books open on the table. Since we began, profit share has returned more than a million dollars to our partner communities.
What a bar actually costs
Roughly a third of the price of a bar is cocoa, sugar and packaging. A third is the hands that sort, roast, wrap and stamp it. The rest covers the building, shipping, the origin trips and the small margin that keeps the lights on. We publish that breakdown every year.
Stamp of a real person
The farmers who grew the cocoa in each bar appear on the wrapper: their names, their community, their harvest. No anonymous supply chain, no certification badge standing in for a relationship.
